As the first abbot of Shaolin, Batuo devoted himself to translating Buddhist scriptures and preaching the doctrines to hundreds of his followers. According to legend, Bodhidharma , the twenty-eighth patriarch of Mahayana Buddhism , arrived at Shaolin Temple in 527. He spent nine years meditating in a cave on Wuru Peak and established the Chan tradition at Shaolin Temple. Since then, Bodhidharma has been honored as the patriarch of Chan Buddhism.
